Alberta NDP leadership candidate Kathleen Ganley has named Edmonton-Manning MLA Heather Sweet Rural Strategy Lead for Team Ganley as part of the ongoing work to build a strategy to grow the economy in rural Alberta, end the crisis in rural healthcare and win seats in rural Alberta.

“Heather has been a critical member of our team since Day 1 and this new role will be so critical as we continue to grow in every corner of Alberta,” Ganley said. “Heather is focused on the economy and ensuring it works for people. She has worked relentlessly to build connections in rural Alberta for years and we’re so fortunate to have her advice, her ideas and her work ethic."

Sweet presently serves as the Alberta NDP Caucus Critic for Rural Economic Development, Agriculture and Forestry. She has a long history of advocating for workers’ rights.

“I can feel the momentum for Kathleen and her incredible team are doing in Calgary, in Edmonton but also right across mid-sized cities and rural Alberta,” Sweet said. “Our team has made it a priority to talk to people about the issues that matter to them. With Kathleen’s leadership and the incredible folks that come forward to help every day, I believe we will make an offer to rural Alberta that will land and will lead to us winning many seats for the first time in 2027.”

Sweet will lead development of a rural strategy for growing the Alberta NDP and developing platform commitments that are critical to rural Albertans.
